Camping with An Inch of Gray (Or, Why Get Your Roots Done When You Can't Even Wash Your Hair?)

Just back from our annual camping trip in WV. Here are my impressions of some of what transpired:

Buying, staging, packing, transporting, unloading, using, re-packing, transporting and cleaning 2 carloads of stuff for a trip lasting less than 48 hours: Sanity-questioning.

Breaking out in boils from the medicine I was taking for Road Rash: Painful.

Waking up surrounded by mountains, and seeing eagles overhead: Awe-inspiring.

Spending time with my brother, sister, cousins and friends: Validating and uplifting.

Tubing down a river in a raft with my slightly nervous sister: Empowering and Memory Making.

Being confident enough to sit at a picnic table reading books while everyone else was drinking copious amounts of beer and chewing tobacco: I am who I am-ing.

Indulging in the deep fried delicacies of Fry Fest (this year’s items: onion rings, chimichangas, wings, nuggets, French fries, fish, jalapeƱo hush puppies, and Twinkies): Delicious and Artery-clogging.

Using latrines and having no running water except for the river: Fine. Really.

Having the honor of dislodging a tick embedded in my sister’s bare butt: Pee in my pants funny.

Oh my god hysterical. The tick, I mean. Love all the pix and your commentary, as usual. Looks like there was someone else reading too! I haven't been camping in ages, and totally miss it. Only been white water rafting once - but had a blast! Glad you had a good trip!

I can't imagine how I would react to finding a tick embedded in my butt... It's wouldn't be pretty.

I especially like the being who I am-ing.

We have this same exact family event every Labor Day weekend, except no Fry Fest. We are so lame! I want to fry stuff!! Though we do have oyster fest, which is divine, with oysters right out of the bay served raw and grilled.

Hate ticks. Love to camp. But I only do it in a trailer now. Much nicer.

I can't get your sisters butt out of my mind. Well, not that I've seen it or anything....

Yo that is so funny. And, those latrines? As far as latrines go they are very swanky. I clearly remember the latrines I used as a young girl scout, with basically a giant dark shed and two "stalls" with a wooden shelf and a hole cut out. I was constantly afraid when peeing that I'd get bitten by a spider or wasp or snake. And, no, I wasn't just paranoid. The counselors warned us to go quickly.

BUT looks like you at least had good sunlight to see your surroundings! that's a plus!
