So we got Molly's ears pierced on Tuesday night. She was excited, but I may have pressured her a wee bit because:
a) I got mine pierced when I was her age and I remember begging for months before my mom finally let me do it. So, I may have been operating off of contact excitement left over from 1978.
b)Her birthday is coming up and I have absolutely NO gift ideas for her.
If you recall that 2 years ago we gave her a coupon for Christmas guaranteeing she would never have to go to Home Depot again, you understand that while it may seem great having a kid who never really wants anything, it can sap your creative powers. So, the idea of getting her a bunch of cute earrings for her birthday was appealing.
I guess she doesn't find my life all that glamorous.
She was a rock star in the piercing chair and got adorable little blue studs.
The next morning, however, she had a little piercer's remorse, which probably happens more often with piercings in more "creative" body locations.
Molly hugged me tightly and said she was afraid that getting earrings might mean she was growing up too fast. She continued, "It'll be awful. Like, instead of you taking care of me and doing stuff for me anymore I'll have to take care of kids and pay taxes and stuff."
I guess she doesn't find my life all that glamorous.
Oh what a doll! I can't believe she said that, sounds like me when I was little, tended to worry beyond my age.
ReplyDeleteWhen her friends see them she'll be glad she did it!!
Aw, the little sweetie. My daughter told me yesterday that she wanted to be an adult. (I think because she doesn't like anyone making any decisions for her.) When I reminded her that she wouldn't get to play nearly as much, and that she'd have to work and pay for things, she decided she'd stay a child forever. I told her to split the difference. So, what is the earring maintenance these days? Twirl or not twirl? How is Molly feeling?
ReplyDeleteMy aunt pierced my ears, in our kitchen. She was in beauty school. It really explains a lot about me.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a heartwarming post. So sweet. I love that she said that; it says a lot about her.
ReplyDeleteBTW, I love the title of your blog!! It's one of the best.
If you're interested, consider linking this at my Saturday Sampling post this week; it's where I invite people to link up their favorite post from the week. Of course, I just got here, so I don't know if you have a lot of other gems this week! :)
BTW, do you mind if I ask how you found me?
Is that the Clair's treatment, I see?
ReplyDeleteI was just in there TODAY. I am thinking about getting my ears re-pierced because the holes are SO far down on my earlobe. I can't wait to get the Hello Kitty studs. j/k.
I got my ears pierced for my 13th birthday. Back then only doctors (or best friends) could do it. I had to have 14kt gold studs, and I remember the little ball earrings we bought (at Sears) were eight dollars. Seemed crazy back then.
ReplyDeleteMy hair is short now, and I've started wearing them this summer. Ah memories.
Happy almost your daughter's birthday. Your role was important that day, so you deserve good wishes too!
You are so lucky! So great to have a girl who doesn't want to grow up too fast.
ReplyDeleteI didn't get mine pierced until I was 15. And I only did it then because my friends insisted. And they did it - ice, potato, and a sterilized needle! They've never once been infected or caused me problems. :)
I love that she would say that! Too funny.
ReplyDeleteAnnie just had her ears pierced for her birthday. She had been begging me for a year, so I finally caved. I had no idea what to get her either so this was the perfect thing. I made this great show of how I was going to finally let her do this, but secretly quite thrilled that I didn't have to come up with another idea.
Oh, so cute. I hope she kept them in though, and you'll be able to find her tons of cute earrings on etsy! I think Kate recently had some on wishing true that came in matching mom/daughter combos...
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! That story totally took me back to the chair at the Piercing Pagota, circa 1987. Of course, my ears subsequently became infected and closed up. I didn't have the guts to get them re-pierced until I was 23. I cried.
ReplyDeleteYour daughter is precious... and precocious. :)
i am obsessed with molly!
ReplyDeleteI am obsessed with Molly, too. She is wise beyond her years!
ReplyDeleteThat is so funny! How could she not think your life is glamorous?
ReplyDeleteI like her. I like her a lot.
ReplyDeleteShe might have a point there. Taxes suck. She's adorable though.
ReplyDeleteDoes this mean I'm a bad mother because we got our daughter's ears pierced on/for her second birthday? She'll be three in a couple weeks, and still looks adorable with her ears pierced. My sister-in-law won't let my niece get her ears pierced, but she paints her finger and toe-nails. I won't let my daughter paint hers (she's never asked) because I consider it "make-up" and too grown up. Just goes to show that everyone's ideas and standards are different - which is just fine. (Of course hubby had to sign off on the ear-piercing, which he didn't have a problem with!) Molly is suer cute, and her comment tugged my heart.
ReplyDeleteSo sweet. She has your sense of humor.
ReplyDeleteI remember being so anxious in the 4th grade for being allowed to shave my legs. And my friends and I couldn't wait to get our periods. What were we thinking?!?
jbhat
My mom made me wait until I was 10! You're a great mom!
