Current State of Affairs

I'm not going to say this parenting a preschooler and a teenager thing is impossible, but I will say it isn't always super-fun. Check out these voice texts between Tim and me when I was out much longer on Saturday than I'd intended:

I'm glad a sense of humor helps.

  1. This is fantastic! Mine are 25, 22 and 19 tomorrow, and there are still days I'd like to run away! It doesn't mean that they're not amazing people, or that I'm not so grateful that I get to be their mom -- but parenting is really hard work. You're doing an amazing job!

  5. I can so identify with this. I have kids ranging in age from 23 to 8. The teens still at home want to borrow cars and talk about boyfriends. The youngest boys run around thinking that the talk of boyfriends is the most hilarious thing ever, which their sisters find infinitely annoying. When the oldest come home from college the youngest climb on them in their excitement. The oldest tolerate this for a bit, before complaining that they are going to come home less often. I can hardly hold a coherent conversation with anyone. And when we do hold a conversation, the college-age son needs to be reminded that comments that seem acceptable from a 19-year old, are not, coming from the 8-year-old little brother who repeats everything he hears. Meeting the needs and managing the behaviors of a broad age range of kids is crazy challenging!

  6. I can relate. I have struggled with the kids that I am supposed to be letting make their own decision while still parenting kids who need to be reminded to put on a coat before they walk to school. Tough to straddle the different ages and adjust mothering techniques when necessary. Teens don't want to be told when to wear a coat - along with lots of other stuff they already know. Glad you found your way back from your missed exit!
