Baby Shower!

While I wish we could all get together over decaffeinated tea and cupcakes to celebrate the impending arrival of the miraculous Baby D, I know we are a bit too far flung for that. And you might feel compelled to bring the sweetest little presents, too.

Sounds wonderful, but a bit overwhelming!

Instead, I'm hoping some of you might feel moved to celebrate Baby D in one of two ways that  support moms and babies who don't have the resources Tim and I do.

I read an article in the paper today about how low-income families spend nearly 14 percent of their after-tax income on diapers, while for middle-income families, it's closer to 3 percent! I have great laundry facilities in my home if I want to use cloth diapers, and enough money to cover initial cloth diaper purchases if I choose to go in that direction. I can easily have disposable diapers delivered to my home in bulk, or I can hop in my car to find  the best deals; but for many people, buying diapers means taking multiple busses to buy overpriced, smaller packs that run out quickly, and even leave them debating whether to re-use disposables in order to stretch a pack just a little bit longer.

If an online baby shower interests you, it's easy to send monetary or physical donations to the DC Diaper Bank in Baby Donaldson's name. DC Diaper Bank provides diapers to 30 social service organizations that are already helping families in need.

If you would like to help a mom and a baby in a different way, you know I love the offerings in the World Vision Catalog. The New Mother and Baby Kit provides a bassinet, new baby essentials such as cloth diapers, blankets, a bucket for clean water, soap, and parent support/training for a needy mom around the world. No amount of donation is too small!

There's absolutely NO PRESSURE to participate, but I thought it would be neat to share these opportunities with you as we await the baby's arrival.

With Love and Thanks.

I love this idea! I have a friend having her first baby and she registered through baby list. She registered for donations to provide polio vaccinations around the world, donations to food depositories, and many other organizations. She also registered for hand-me-down books and clothes. I THINK IT IS JUST AWESOME TO DO SOMETHING FOR OTHERS DURING SUCH A JOYFUL TIME!

Hi,
I rarely leave comments on blogs but this is the ONE piece of advice I tell all new moms (and really, I stop at the one piece of information). I am an American who has lived in Asia and Africa for the last 15 years. I observed the Chinese method of toilet training. When my three children were babies, I did this method with them and will tell you my middle child was the star at 6 weeks going on her baby born potty. The other two were a little slower at 3 months. It's something American cannot comprehend but diapers are not necessary. Alternative moms in America name early toilet training eliminations communication, but really it's the old fashioned, non-western method. Not for everyone but it is worthwhile thinking alternatively!

Anna -

I just saw your post on FB but I'm not "on" FB so I couldn't respond, my DS had excess amniotic fluid when I was around 24 weeks (he's a twin) - it was categorized as "severe" after an emergency amnio (which I would not do again in retrospect) and 2 weeks of handwringing we found out A) he was OK and B) this is often a transient condition and mine had started to resolve and DID resolve within another 2 weeks. He did end up with IUGR later in the pregnancy but you're almost done so no worries about that.

You're so close and he looks perfect. Try not to worry.

Love, love, love this - your heart - everything. One of my prayer babies was just born last night. Now there are three more to go. :-) I'm touched (and totally unsurprised) by your desire to direct people's attention to those in need.

Hi Anna,

This is such a wonderful idea. Thanks for sharing it. I had no clue that World Vision had things so specific like that. I'll be sure to share this with others, I just love the idea of helping people with such necessities. I hope all goes well for you and baby D :-)
