The Buck Doesn't Stop Here

So I was kind of hoping a week in the woods would make Tim reconsider his yearly commitment to a guys' hunting trip with my brother. This would mean I would no longer have to drive on long, curving WV roads by myself until which time we could meet up for Thanksgiving dinner.

I had high hopes.

I mean this is the guy who is known to fall asleep in the woods, John Irving novel at his side. He's the one who got "scoped" by a rifle a few years back just in time for family Christmas photos.

He may even be known to lift a pinky finger while (whilst?) drinking tea. So I guess I'm saying, a wild mountain man Tim is not.

But darn if he didn't kill the biggest buck in hunting camp history.

I'm screwed.

  1. LOL! It's always the guy they least expect to hit it. My son, the inexperienced fisherman, once caught the biggest fish of the group while "practicing" his casting. I guess congrats to him (or condolences to you) are in order.

  2. My brother and nephews go hunting every chance they get. And by every, I mean twice each weekend.

It's weird, we were born in the suburbs of Chicago, but my brother turned into Grizzly Adams...

(Albeit without a beard and with a professional career.)

  3. You must have not been to happy when he walked in the door with that scratch on his forehead! I would have been so annoyed with Paul! Hopefully you don't have to hang up said buck anywhere in your home. That would be um..overkill?!

  4. I suppose they might have a venison section on allrecipes.com! Great story and get out the crock pot!

  5. I don't know a darned thing about hunting, but I really see what you mean by "the softest cheek in the world" in the photo with his dad....

  6. The pinky finger thing is hilarious!

But, yeah, it sounds like you're screwed. :)

  7. Yep, you're screwed. Sometimes bagging a little one (or worse, spending day(s) out in the cold with nothing to show for it) will turn men off to their idea of being hunters. But now that he has major bragging rights, he'll be in it for the long haul.

On a brighter note- yay for venison! Unless you don't like deer meat, in which case, you're extra-screwed!

  8. Hopefully you like Venison. Think of it has the most organic meat that you could ever put on your table. :) Let me know if you want any recipes...I live with the Mighty Hunter, there is a difference in how you cook it, compared to beef. donna

  9. Ha! My husband recently decided he wanted to take up target shooting - I guess I should be thankful. Well, I guess its time to get a dehydrator and be prepared for lots of deer jerky. ;)

  10. Good for Tim --he can renew his man card with confidence...and teach Margaret how to keep the unworthy ones far away from her!

  11. You can't deny that caveman instinct - sorry sistah.

But may I say - way to go Tim!

  14. Andy says, "Pictures!"

Are you going to have a new friend mounted on a wall in your living room (garage!) now, too?

Big boys and their big bucks. You are totally screwed.

Spa week, here you come :)

  15. I have 10 deer heads (TEN) on the walls in my house. I feel your pain. I hope Tim doesn't become as smitten with a tree stand as my husband is.

  16. My husband is a hunter, I feel your pain. He just started a few years ago. And.....once they get a big one, they become slightly obsessed with getting a yet, even bigger one. The nice thing is once the hubby gets a "family deer", you know, one we eat, he then donates any additional deer to Hunters for Hunger. It's a great organization for feed the homeless. Good job Tim. Sending you all a huge hug from Purcellville.

  17. I love it.. John has to be losing his mind.. I'm sure none of his WV buddies are giving him a hard time about his "citified" brother-in-law getting the biggest buck! One LESS story John can tell around the fire at SmokeHole.. Congrats to Tim..

  18. Oh no! LOL!

Congrats to Tim, and oh, Anna, I'm so sorry.

    Hugs!

  21. People who hurt animals suck. You might want to look at your heart if you think causing suffering is fun.

  23. I agree anon. And I am shocked this father's priority would be to kill animals and the wife raves about it. Disgusting.
@Kasey Galentine--those ten deer heads on your wall sound ultra classy! Hick.

  24. Agree. I live in a rural area and there are constant reports of deer who were hit but not instantly killed by someone who thinks this kind of thing is a "sport." These animals live for days or even weeks with a bullet or part of an arrow lodged in their bodies, causing them to suffer incredibly. It also keeps them from finding food and water, so they dehydrate slowly. It is an extraordinarily painful process for them. There is some great irony here, the kind that brings no pleasure at all.

  25. After the horrible experience you would think they would never want to voluntarily see suffering or death again in any form.
I just read a story about a buck who was shot but not killed who then impailed the hunter due to distress and pain. There is a missing sensitivty/ empathy chip in anyone who can sit in a tree, stalk and kill and animal.

  26. I know a man or two who may "lift a pinky" when drinking, but have the depth and intelligence to avoid torturing animals. Cluelessness and cruelty don't have a thing to do with masculinity.

  27. I refuse to get into an ethical or religious debate over the subject of hunting. This isn't the place for it. In fact, I think that's my point....THIS ISN'T THE PLACE FOR IT.

Anna's blog should be a safe haven of love and support. If you don't agree with something she has written, simply agree to disagree (nonverbally) or stop reading the blog. Do not bully a family that has already been through hell and that continues to struggle every single day. I have never hunted a day in my life, but Tim's choice to do so and Anna's choice to blog about it certainly doesn't make me love them any less.

An Inch of Gray has been a wealth of support for this family and for others in the grieving process. It is not meant to be a forum for animal rights or the right to bear arms. Go elsewhere if that is what you are seeking.

Anna, please continue to make us laugh and cry and hope and be so very thankful for our daily "problems." We adore you and your broken little family.

    Sincerely,
    Always Reading

  28. Those animals deserve a haven, and no one should "bully" them either. We all decide what to put out to the world, and we all face consequences to our actions. If someone causes suffering, someone just might make a comment about it. That is the case for every person. is I'll be unsubscribing to this blog and making a charitable donation to the Humane Society and WWF. Cruel people.

  29. I too am done reading this blog or contributing to anything associated with it. Anyone who can kill in the face of what this blog has become about is a complete hypocrite IMO.

  30. Hahahahahahaha...This is so funny. Sorry had to laugh. And yes, you are screwed!

  33. Post about killing animals, Laura wants to hit someone over the head for, God forbid, having an opinion and most of these commenters are disturbingly violent. I thank God I am not neighbors with people like this.
