Scene One:
So when I dared to give Molly clothing advice for Friday, when she will be getting up in front of the entire school and has been told to “dress up,” she scorned my choices immediately.
I did not like her tone. A skirt flew through the air.
Keeping my voice low and calm, I said, “You may wear what you want, but I refuse to accept your telling me I don’t know anything about clothes.”
More eye-rolling, mocking.
“I was, as you may have heard, voted Best Dressed in high school.” Yes, I'm not above playing the Senior Superlative card with my 8 year old.
Her reply: “I wouldn’t brag about that. Everyone knows that was the 80’s.”
Scene Two:
Upon presenting my beloved son with a shearling lined hoodie from Lands End, I was distressed to see he rejected it because, “It looks like it’s for a girl.”
Molly agreed.
Jake continued, “Sorry, Mom, but I have to go with Molly on this one. She’s Present Day.”

Sheesh.
well, you can do what my mom always did with the clothes we wouldn't wear...she took them and wore them until they were clean wore out....
ReplyDeletehang in there. you are a great mom. :]
Ooh...I'm not looking forward to that one. I'm glad at 8 months my son has no opinion on clothing. = )
ReplyDeleteTell them what doesn't kill you makes you stronger! Besides... we've had the 60s and 70s fashions resurface already. How much longer until the 80s raises it's ugly head. Will they think we're cool then? Probably not.
ReplyDeletepfsh, what do kids know?? i bet you rocked that 80s hair, girl!
ReplyDeleteWhat is Molly doing in front of the whole school? I wish I could be there. Please don't forget to update us on her outfit!!
ReplyDeleteThat is too funny. I love "present day."
ReplyDeleteI wrote a post about this eye rolly disease that appears to be afflicting our young a while back. My daughter has been doing it to me for years. I did it to my Mum for years. It's a freaking epidemic! Of course according to your kids you know absolutely NOTHING.
ReplyDeleteWe know you completely rock Anna. And one day so will your kids.
It does kind of look like it's for a girl. sorry, mom.
ReplyDeleteKEEP BELIEVING
Anna - got the same jacket for mine... got the same comment from mine.
ReplyDeleteWhere did we go wrong? :)
They are adorable!!!
ReplyDeleteMy son at 15 has flip flops held together by duct tape and just shaved his head... not on purpose so there were patches.
*sigh*
I, too, was voted best dressed....in 1982. I've tried to use that one with my kids, and got pretty much the same results. I feel you, girlfriend. I feel you!
ReplyDeleteoh boy, I'm in for it. My 3yo is currently in a layering phase where she wears no less than 5 pieces of clothing at any given time.
ReplyDeleteI sort of can't wait for my daughter to assert her independence regarding what she wears. I WANT her to wear tutus and galoshes at the same time. Truth be told, I want to dress like her MOST of the time! ha!
ReplyDeleteBOTH of your kids crack me up, too!
I think they inherited your gift for snark, even if the sartorial strand remains elusive.
ReplyDeletejbhat
love it. can you ask molly to start a blog?
ReplyDeleteHaha - your blogs always crack me up.
ReplyDeleteThat picture with the hoodie - is that a sarcastic smile I see? Love it!
Wait, you mean Eighties fashion is not cool? Crap.
ReplyDeleteMy kids put me in my place long ago. Today the pediatrician looked straight at Ruby and said, "My, this is the first time I have seen you come into the office not dressed as a princess!" That was my cue to nonchalantly drop Lexie's blanket over my purse where Ruby's princess heels (one Sleeping Beauty, one Snow White) were sticking out. I had just forced her to change into more sensible flats. Yesterday she wore a nightgown over her darling sundress and cardigan to the gym.
ReplyDeletePeople have begun to recognize us around town because of her never-ending need to channel all things Disney Princess...ick!!
Oh, SNAP.
ReplyDeleteThis day is just around the corner at my house...I can feel it.
Until then, I'll keep cramming two sets of shoulder pads into my daughters' Twilight t-shirt.
Hey, "Dynasty" was a great show!
:-) Anna
Anna, clearly you do not beat your children often enough. If you did, they would be more than happy to wear the resale-shopped Toughskins from Sears and the neon tie-dyed t-shirt.
ReplyDeleteI do now, and will continue, to dress my children into submission. My only response to their clothing choices is: When you pay for it, you get to pick it out. Until then, your response can be, "Thanks mom".
~you know I'm totally kidding, right?
On the plus side, she looks really cute in the hoodie.
ReplyDelete(sorry, couldn't resist!)
My Sam AND one of his (boy) friends have that exact hoodie. Totally boy. And cozy.
ReplyDeleteI've just been catching up on your posts. I've been sorely neglecting my blog reading, so I've got some serious ground to cover all over the blogging world. This was so, so funny! Present day? Love that.
ReplyDeleteOh. My. God. I am so glad I don't kids, because while this scenario is hilarious while reading, I don't think I have the self-confidence to enact the scene in real life.
